Astoria started as an experiment in building a market you could actually play. We're still building that game. We also want it to do some good outside of it.
We like building things people enjoy. But we'd like Astoria's success to mean something beyond the game.
For us, that means helping students get to resources and opportunities, backing teachers who know what their classrooms need, remembering that not every student learns the same way, and helping with basic needs where we can.
We can't fix everything, and we won't pretend to. We're going to start somewhere.
02EDUCATION & OPPORTUNITY
Opportunity shouldn't depend on where you start.
Most of what we do will go to students and the people who teach them, where the right resources can make a real difference.
STUDENTS
Some students start with less.
Fewer supplies, older tech, schools stretching tight budgets. We want to help close a few of those gaps: books, supplies, technology, a better place to learn, a way into something after school.
TEACHERS & CLASSROOMS
Listen first. Then help.
Teachers usually know exactly what their students need. When they ask for it, we'd like to help them get it: classroom supplies, books, STEM materials, learning spaces, a quiet corner to talk.
DIFFERENT WAYS OF LEARNING
Every mind works differently.
School isn't one-size-fits-all. We want to back the resources, spaces and educators that help students with ADHD and other learning differences find their way in.
YOUTH OPPORTUNITYLATER
Something to work toward.
Down the road, we'd like to help young people find something to get into: mentorship, money skills, coding, game development, starting a business, creative projects. None of this exists yet. It's where we hope to go.
03BASIC NEEDS
Sometimes the need is simpler.
Sometimes someone doesn't need a program. They need:
a meal
clean clothes
hygiene supplies
a safe place to sleep
a little help getting through a hard stretch
We also want to support credible organizations and projects already doing that work.
04HOW WE DO IT
Start small. Be transparent. Keep going.
01Find real projects. Requests from teachers and schools, and established organizations doing the work.
02Contribute what we reasonably can. Some months that will be small. That's fine.
03Write it down. What we supported, how much, and when.
04Link to it. The project or organization page, whenever there's one to share, so you can check it yourself.
05Add the next one. And keep adding as Astoria grows.
05IMPACT LEDGER
The impact ledger.
Astoria usually tracks numbers inside a fictional market. This ledger tracks the ones outside it.
“Your generosity will give my kindergartners more opportunities to learn through play, practice new skills, and grow as readers.”
Mrs. Dzaja, in her thank-you note
SELECTED: picked, not funded yetFUNDED: our contribution went throughCOMPLETED: the project was delivered
06SUPPORTERS
Supported by the community.
Astoria is being built with help from people who believe in what we're trying to do. Thank you to everyone helping us keep building and supporting future projects.
No one is listed here yet. Supporters who'd like to be recognized will appear here.
We'll show what we supported, what we contributed, and where it went.
Each entry gets a link to the project or organization when there's one to share, so you don't have to take our word for it. Nothing goes into the totals until the money has actually gone out.
Schools, teachers and platforms named here haven't endorsed Astoria. We just think their work is worth backing.
08THE LONG VIEW
This is just the beginning.
If Astoria grows, we hope this grows with it. Funding projects is the start. Someday we'd like to build opportunities for young people ourselves: education, mentorship, financial literacy, technology, entrepreneurship and other things worth getting into. We aren't there yet.
